With fall just around the corner, an empty garden and the harvested fruit within reach, it's the perfect time to pickle all kinds of fruits and vegetables indoors again. With the help of wecking and pickling! This fits in perfectly with the themes of sustainability and health, which consumers are very interested in these days. Esschert Design has a wide range of products that are suitable for the pickling process through wecking or pickling.
To briefly explain the definition: “Preserving” is about the preservation of food in jars (usually glass). This can be done by wecking or pickling.
- Wecking:
preserving products by heating and storing them in airtight jars.
- Pickling / gherkin:
preserving products by keeping them in salt, acid, sugar, alcohol or oil in closed jars.
Suitable products for bottling/wecking
There are countless food items to preserve, from strawberries and cherries to onions and corn. The internet is loaded with them. And how about preserving pickles, making nut wine, preserving cucumbers or making a delicious Crema di Limoncello? It will make you feel hungry in an instant.
You can also pickle pears without sugar. This makes it an even healthier alternative.

Tips for a good result
Important tips for your customers who want to get started with wecking / pickling are:
1. Check glasses and lids for damage.
Damage jeopardizes an airtight seal.
2. Reuse is not a problem, but be hygienic
Wash used glasses and lids in boiling water with baking soda. If glasses have been stored in a barn or damp cellar, for example, fungi may grow on them.
3. Do not fill up to the brim
Always keep space under the rim, about 1 cm. This ensures that the seal can do its job.
De finishing touches
Also consider labels, accessories to help with harvesting and accessories that are nice for storing by-products, such as sugar. For example, we have fun pickling labels in our collection, as well as fun decorative checkerboard jarcovers and matching kitchen twine that can be placed around the pickled fruit and vegetables.
