Making a quick and safe fire in a terrace stove or fire bowl
Thursday, May 12, 2022
Most patio heaters are wood-fired. Burning wood gives warmth, a wonderful glow and provides that authentic crackling sound in the background. Burning wood in patio stoves, fire pits and fire bowls has become so popular for a reason. But do you know how to get get a nice fire that doesn't smoke too much (you don’t want to bother the neighbours). A fire that crackles nicely and gives you long enough pleasure so that you don't have to go and get wood all the time so there will still be time for a good conversation?
How do I light a terrace stove or a fire bowl?
You can use many different products to start a fire, fire starters such as wood chips, fire starter cubes or kindling wood. These products are available in our shop, but the "real woodcutter" makes his own kindling of course.
By splitting the wood blocks into smaller pieces, you get pieces of kindling that you can use to start a fire in a patio stove or a fire bowl, for example. Splitting the log can be done with an axe, by beating the log into half on a chopping block. This is a rather heavy and strenuous activity and certainly not without danger.
Another way of splitting firewood is with a wood splitter, also called a kindling maker. This is a safe way of splitting wood as the logs are split without sharp objects by a blow of a hammer. The log splits when it is rightly placed in the wood splitter and a hit with a hammer. This is less heavy than using an axe and also much safer. The high-quality splitters are equipped with a safety ring so that no splinters can fly around. Of course, caution is always neccesary.
