Weekdays can be exhausting for all of us. In order to conserve our energy until the weekend, we all try to save time and effort in different ways. For example, with a once-a-week shopping routine or by cooking extensive dishes only on the weekends. Even though we know it would be better to eat healthier, many people turn to pre-packed, semi-prepared meals during workdays saying that it is easier. The good news, though, is that we don’t have to give up on healthy and sustainable dining, as there are handy tools that help us in different ways in the kitchen.
Pickling with flip-top jars
A healthy meal requires quality and fresh ingredients. However, it can be a challenge to keep vegetables, fruit, bread or other products fresh for a longer period of time. Flip-top jars are excellent choices if we want to preserve food quality. Furthermore, depending on the size, you can use it for different purposes.
Think about cherries, plums or coffee beans for example! Especially in the summertime the jars enable to make delicious pickled fruit and vegetables. It enhances the flavor and prolongs the life of vegetables and fruits. Since the jars can be reused, you can reap the benefits all year round!
The canning jar with orange rubber O-ring does not allow insects or moths to reach the food and ensures your food remains fresh as it shuts down air. As it is made of glass you can easily see how much is left from the coffee or, even more important, the cookies! Also, it is easy to clean, but note that it’s not dishwasher proof.
The fruits of Autumn
Autumn is making its entrance and with it the season of nuts starts. Walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds are bursting with vitamins and minerals and are extremely energy-rich. So it's no surprise that they are used in many recipes and that we like to eat them straight out of our hands.
However, as nuts are surrounded by a hard outer shell, a nutcracker is needed for them. In the 17th century we used nutcrackers with a screw mechanism, to crack difficult nuts with a hard shell, for the first time. Nowadays everyone knows such an ingenious thing and it has become quite essential in every kitchen. However, this authentic nutcracker made of cast iron is a traditional piece of craftsmanship bearing the signs of an age-old tradition.
Tip: After cracking them, use a flip top jar, so that you can enjoy fresh legumes after the autumn season, too.
Fancy storage tins for the kitchen
Nowadays, people tend to eat much more consciously and healthier, we are buying more and more fresh ingredients. This food has to be preserved longer and better than prepackaged food. Grandmother already knew what are the best ways to keep potatoes, garlic or onions fresh. “You need to keep them in a cool, dark place which is well ventilated!”
Using different types of storage tins not only does this work, but they also add to decoration in the kitchen. The holes on the side provides proper air ventilation, which helps to keep onions or garlic fresh and reduce the chance of sprouting. Since they can be closed easily with their lid, you can keep potatoes and other vegetables in the kitchen, and at the same time in the dark. Also, they are made of a smooth material, making it easy to clean them. See the whole range of storage tins here.
What to do with the green waste?
Consuming fresh fruit and vegetables generates waste. However, organic waste is not a waste at all, if collected and used appropriately. As compost contains a lot of useful nutrition and minerals, it is worth collecting it separately and later using it, for instance in the garden.
Place a composter in the kitchen to collect your green waste easily. Use the potato peelings, coffee grounds and other biodegradable waste as compost in the garden soil afterwards. The composter tin has ventilation holes in the lid, but you don’t have to worry about the smell though because of the active carbon filter inside the lid. This neutralizes the smell and makes sure no nasty odours escape. Furthermore, thanks to the smoothly finished inner side the kitchen composter is super easy to clean.
