It is March and spring is really here. Slowly but surely, the garden is coming back to life, but if we want to enjoy it to the full, it is important to do the right jobs at the right time. In March there are already some maintenance chores that you can take care of and there is also plenty that can be pruned! With our garden tools, every job becomes easier and more fun!
Good preparation is half the work
Good preparation is essential for effective gardening. What is the state of your soil stock? Make an inventory and replenish it if necessary. Afraid of dirty fingers? With our handy garden spades you can replenish the soil easily. These top tools make the job a breeze.
Enjoy your lawn
Do you want to enjoy a healthy and green lawn soon? Then now is the time to tackle a number of tasks, so that your lawn will look its very best again in a little while. We have listed the tasks you can do in March.
- Remove the thatch from the lawn. You can do this easily with a rake. By removing the layer you give the grass room to grow again.
- Scarify the grass. Grass roots want to breathe and grow, and to do this they need fresh air. Roots often cannot grow properly because the soil under a lawn does not contain enough sand to keep it breathable. By scarifying your grass, it is able to breathe again and rainwater can reach the roots better. You can aerate the grass by pricking it with a grass pick. Then sprinkle a mixture of compost and sand over the lawn.
- Also start monthly fertilising the lawn this month.
- It is also time to sow again. This can be done from now until autumn.
What do we do with the plants?
March is a good month for transplanting bare-root hedges, shrubs and trees. Once the leaves have sprouted, it is much more difficult to move them successfully. There are various birds that love a vegetable, plant or germinating seed. That is of course a shame. It is therefore wise to protect plant beds with nets. Are there still dead daffodils in the garden? It is best to remove them with a pair of secateurs or by hand. If you leave the spent flowers, they will form seed pods that require a lot of energy from the other plants. Our handy tool sets make this job a lot easier!
Prune it up!
This month is ideal for pruning the garden. This way you will have a lot of fun with your plants. Make sure you have gloves and a good pair of secateurs. When you use blunt scissors, you first risk accidents and wounds. And what about a handy apron? That way you have all your tools close to you. This makes the job a lot easier. Do you have climbing roses in the garden? Cut back the side branches considerably, but do not prune the main branches. Pollard willows can also be pruned, but do this before mid-March. Cut the dry parts of the pollard willow with hedge shears. Do you cut them into small pieces? Then you can leave them lying around so that they can decompose into organic material on the ground.
An ivy is a beautiful plant that many people have in the garden. Do not forget to prune it. Does the ivy have loose branches? Prune these and also remove stems that have attached themselves around the woodwork of windows and gutters. This can cause many problems.
Denim garden gloves
Do you sell garden tools in your shop? Then consider hanging matching tools next to the plants. This way, the consumer immediately sees what he or she has to use the tools for! Ideal! You can also do this in the webshop, add matching items to products, so they are easier for the customer to find and buy.
