With nature as our great inspiration, the environment and sustainability are of great importance to us. That is why Esschert Design has had an official FSC® certificate since 2006, for which we are tested every year. So you buy your products at Esschert Design responsibly. Now almost 400 of our products that made of wood and paper have a FSC certification. In this blog you can read which requirements these products meet and how you recognize them.
But what exactly does an FSC™ label mean?
FSC™ is the hallmark of the international non-profit organisation Forest Stewardship Council™, which promotes sustainable forestry. The main goal of FSC™ is to protect the world's forests against destruction and irreparable damage.
The social, ecological and economic aspects of forest management should be taken into account in a responsible manner in the production of paper and wood. To check this, FSC™ has developed a number of principles which are tested annually by the certificate holders.
What requirements does the FSC™ wood and paper of your products have?
In May Esschert Design was audited again by an independent certification agency that works with a so-called Chain Of Custody: a system in which the wood is tracked from felling (in a certified forest) to the final product. Every link in the chain must be FSC™ certified, from the forest manager and the factory to the final seller.
This means that the wood that is used from FSC-controlled sources is not coming from:
- Illegal logging
- Logging in violation of traditional and/or civil rights
- Logging from forest areas of high conservation value threatened by management activities
- Logging from forest areas that are converted into plantations or other non-forest uses
- Wood from forests in which genetically modified trees have been planted

On the packaging
The quality mark can usually be found on the packaging and/or on the label attached to the product. You can also see on the packing note of your order which FSC™ label it is per product that is ordered.
Which FSC™ labels can you recognize in our product selection?
Wood and paper products that originate from an FSC™-certified forest can be recognized by the FSC label. Because within the production process it isn't always possible to separate the wood flows from FSC™ certified and non-certified wood, FSC™ allows wood to be mixed under strict conditions. These are indicated as follows on our website:
FSC™ 100%: | When all wood or wood fibres come from FSC-certified forests |
FSC™ Mix 70%: | When at least 70% of all wood or fibres come from FSC-certified forest. The remaining part consists of recycled material or FSC-controlled wood. |
FSC™ Mix Credit: | If 50% of the input for a product comes from FSC-certified forest and when for the remaining 50% of the fibre, it can be proven that it meets the requirements of FSC controlled wood |
